About Transport Department

The Transport Department was originally under the Police Department. In 1979, it was bifurcated from the Police Department with the creation of the Directorate of Transport.

Areas of Responsibility

The roles and responsibilities of the Transport Department are multifaceted, and the workload has increased significantly in recent years. Most of the activities of the Transport Department are non-plan in nature and can be broadly divided into two categories: (i) Public delivery services, such as granting driving licenses, vehicle registration, route permits, and revenue collection through motor vehicle taxes, fees, and fines; (ii) Enforcement of provisions in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, among others.

Staff Strength

The Transport Department has a total of 407 sanctioned posts, which include the posts in the Directorate office and 16 District Transport Offices across all the districts in the state. With the recent recruitment of 161 new personnel for various posts, the total number of staff in the department has increased to 248. Out of the 16 District Transport Offices, the offices in Jiribam, Kakching, Noney, Pherzawl, and Kamjong have been made functional.

Major Activities

The main activity of the Transport Department is to administer, regulate and control Motor Vehicles by way of registration of vehicles, issue of Driving Licenses and Conductor Licenses, granting of Road Permits for transport vehicles and in fostering and nurturing the development and growth of Road Transport Services in the State and to collect revenue from Motor Vehicle Tax, etc. Providing Pool Cars for use by VIPs, Ministers, State Guests and Dignitaries is another important activity of the Department
